Introduction by:

Char Davies describes her work as focused on nature, the perception of space, and the dissolution of boundaries. She uses technology as a tool to communicate with people. Davies discusses her paintings from the 1980s that led her to work with immersive environments, which led to her 3D software company Softimage. She discusses her immersive virtual spaces. She shows a video of the 1995 “Osmose,” in which the breath and balance of viewers determines the experience. Davies plays a video of her latest project “Ephemere” from December 2003, which deals with proximity and speed. Davies explains that all the elements are choreographed, and the sound is localized and generated in real-time. During the question and answer session, Davies describes how the elements are choreographed in “Ephemere,” and the importance of transparency and making boundaries disappear. She talks about the software engineering aspects of her installations, and describes her current work on landscaping.
