Marc Treib Dichotomies Of Dwelling

January 23, 1986 | Video Lecturer:

Marc Treib discusses contemporary Japanese architecture as
both continuity with and change from traditions dating from the 17th century Edo period and beyond. He discusses work that evokes infinite, additivespace and finite space. He contrasts works that emphasize the grid and those that stress the event on the grid. Treib contrasts the traditions of the private garden and the public garden in Japan. Fourth, he discusses the enduring interplay of the architectonic and the metaphorical in Japanese dwellings. Last, he discusses contemporary works in terms of the traditional aesthetic principles of shibui (simplicity) and opulent exuberance.
