Kwinter addresses a question involving developments between the years 1985 and 1990 in research of linear and nonlinear systems which prove that linearity is extremely rare in nature. He then revisits the history of the abstract machine. In the twentieth century it was discovered that a machine could be described by a set of numbers. Finally Kwinter addresses feelings of optimism and pessimism regarding the eventual pervasiveness of soft systems.
