Hollein admits avoiding certain building types, such as prisons, and competitions in which the brief was irresponsibly presented. He discusses the difficulty in actually creating something that achieves the intended statement. Hollein characterizes Vienna as both a creative city, but also a difficult place to practice architecture and the arts. He describes a cultural climate that attempts to prevent the artist from creating, but at the same time generates creativity through resistance.
