Herman Hertzberger presents a handwashing basin design that used a hardhat for a mold as an example of the versatility of ordinary objects in design. As a larger scale example, he discusses his Montessori school project in Delft where the articulation of individual sand pit flower pots made from cinder blocks corresponds to the scale of the purpose. He claims that he does not care for fa?ades and considers the most important parts of the project to be large blocks he placed in the common spaces because of their likeness to multi-functioning single-celled organism.
