Herman Hertzberger begins his presentation of a home for the elderly project in Amsterdam by referring to Charles Jencks’ misreadings of the symbolism of the cruciform columns, among other features. Similar to his experimental housing project, the concrete structure is quickly covered by ordinary beautiful objects. Using his sense of human behavior, he organizes the public spaces so as to make the users feel a responsibility for their maintenance. He also notes his use of stable doors in place of normal front doors as a way of dealing with the psychological problem of elderly people waiting for visitors behind open doors.
