Hertzberger begins his lecture by explaining his interest in the creation of networks and systems that allow for change and variety within their original organizational structure. He presents his Centraal Beheer project of 1972, which aggregated units leaving “streets” between them for public functions which could bleed into the units themselves. He continued this concept by focusing on a roof structure to span above multiple housing types, allowing for flexibility beneath but generating coherency of organization and connection of in-between spaces. Hertzberger continued this interest into several other projects including his Chass? Theater in Breda, NL. The theater combines discrete elements under one continuous surface and in doing so allows for flexible in-between spaces.
