Nigel Coates begins with a description of London as the result of countless accumulation which could potentially be paralyzing to a designer, and which creates intensities as exemplified on Portobello Road. The Strand, another important route in London, is a symbol of the empire’s riches with untouchable buildings, while other parts of the city show evidence of new buildings which tend to ignore what exists. Britain’s constant inner struggle between tradition and resistance reflect the cultural ideas generated by either the working class or the aristocracy. As seen in the work of Leigh Bowery and Cindy Sherman, the avant garde has a spirit of deviation which is now incorporated and even expected in the art world.
