Lerup speaks about abandoned wooden houses found in Texas, originally built by German immigrants, which he describes as compositions of bar-shapes, e.g. a porch of vertical bars. He connects these bar-compositions with the bar building type, i.e. a place for social drinking. He emphasizes the importance of metaphor, thinking and language in service of form. He discusses facades in terms of open and closed systems. Lerup maintains that the ultimate building would be nothing but promenades, moving around, above and below while you sit in place.
