Sheila Levrant de Bretteville presents a lecture exploring the relationship between feminism and design. She first discusses her involvement at the California Institute of the arts, documenting her interest in teaching and research. She then explains her engagement in graphic design and her interest in mass production and new technologies. De Bretteville later documents a series of projects that relate built form to feminism. Among the examples she explores in this argument are curtain walls and domestic planning.
Sheila Levrant de Bretteville presents the work of feminist architect Susana Torre. Presenting an example of one of Torre’s residential projects in Puerto Rico, she advocates for an open plan and flexibility in the plan. She finally argues for a more careful appropriation of space and the consideration of granting the user enough space to act out their needs.
